GelShift FAQ: Everything You Need to Know About Londontown’s Transformative Top Coat

If you’ve ever wished your favorite Londontown lakur could last like a gel manicure, GelShift was designed for you. But because this product is a little different from our traditional one-step or quick-dry toppers, we’ve rounded up answers to the most common questions our community has asked since launch. Think of this as your go-to guide for mastering GelShift—from application to removal.

1. Does GelShift require a UV/LED lamp?

Yes. GelShift is a gel formula optimized for use over traditional nail polish formulas, which means it must be cured under a UV or LED lamp to set properly. Without curing, the formula will stay tacky and won’t deliver the long-lasting, high-gloss finish it’s designed for.

2. How is GelShift different from Londontown’s other top coats?

Unlike our Gel Genius Top Coat or quick-dry formulas, GelShift transforms any polish into a gel manicure. It’s best for those who want extended wear and the ultra shiny protection of a gel manicure without the damage.
  • Gel Genius Top Coat: Gel-like. No lamp needed, high-shine finish.
  • GelShift: Gel. Requires curing light, longer wear & durability. Ultra-shiny finish.

3. My GelShift feels sticky after curing—what went wrong?

A few factors can affect results:
  • Polish must be completely dry before applying GelShift. Nail polish must set for at least 2 hours and optimally 12-24 hours before applying GelShift. If not, the finish can appear dull or uneven.
  • Curing time matters. Be sure to cure under your UV/LED lamp as directed.
  • Cure a few fingers at a time: For some it is helpful to only cure 2-3 fingers at a time so the the light can reach the entire nail while curing.

4. The formula is thicker than the polish I'm used to using. How can I apply it better?

Because GelShift is thicker than standard top coats, application technique makes a difference. Try these tips:
  • Apply in thin, even layers (avoid overloading the brush).
  • Allow polish underneath to fully dry before application. 12-24 hours of dry time is optimal.
  • Cap off the nail by carefully dragging the brush across the top of your finger nail prevent peeling.
  • Carefully remove any GelShift that floods out to touch the skin surrounding your nail before curing to prevent premature peeling and lifting.

5. How do I remove GelShift?

  1. Gently file off the shiny top layer of GelShift. Do not file all the way to the nail bed, your nail color should still be visible.
  2. Soak a cotton pad in acetone-based remover.
  3. Place it on the nail and wrap with foil.
  4. Leave for 10–15 minutes.
  5. Gently lift softened product with a cuticle pusher if needed.
No harsh buffing required—just patience and proper soaking. Since the gel doesn't have direct contact with your nail bed removal is more effortless Than a traditional gel manicure.
